So you just bought your first house, and you're about to move in... Here are some helpful tips on what you need to do before moving into your new home:

Top-to-Bottom Cleaning
  • Wash down cabinets, counters, and plumbing fixtures.
  • Mop and steam clean hard surface floors
  • Have carpets professionally cleaned
  • Wipe down crown molding and baseboards
  • Dust vents, fans and light fixtures
  • Paint walls, ceilings and interior trim, if desired

Make Service Calls
  • Have your HVAC systems inspected, cleaned and serviced
  • Call an exterminator to spray for routine nuisances, especially if your house has sat vacant
  • Have air ducts professionally cleaned

Make Your Home Safe
  • Change the locks and install deadbolts on all entry doors
  • Install motion-activated lights near entrances
  • Purchase a fire-proof safe for storing important personal documents, valuables & jewelry
  • Check and/or replace batteries in smoke detectors
  • Develop a fire escape plan
  • Locate main water shuf-off and circuit breaker

Maximize Energy Efficiency
  • Install a programmable digital thermostat
  • Install ceiling fans
  • Replace filters in HVAC systems
  • Install LED of CFL bulbs
  • Check and replace/repair weather-stripping

And now that you're almost settled in, don't forget to introduce yourself to the neighbors!
